This is a guide for anyone wishing to reference disability in public documents such as journalist’s articles, publicist’s copy, critics reviews or academic’s papers.
We are regularly asked for guidance around correct language, this page includes two guides that are continuously updated.
Language around Deafness, Disability, and neurodivergence is nuanced, and it is always best to ask individuals for their personal preference around language. These guides are intended to be a jumping off point, not a definitive stance on language.
When writing, we would advise you bear in mind two key questions when considering referencing disability: is this reference relevant to the article? Is the language appropriate?
The first guide you can download is a quick sheet, this is a list of terms that we at Graeae use when we need to reference someone who is Deaf, Disabled, or neurodivergent. The second guide is a more comprehensive document that includes additional information about why we use the language we do.
We aim to make these available in as many formats as possible. If you need it in a format that we have not made available, please do contact us.
