Black Lives Matter
Our statement on Black Lives Matter can be read below:
We are shocked, saddened and appalled by the brutal and unnecessary murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis on 25 May 2020. We are here in solidarity with our Black brothers and sisters.
Graeae is a Deaf and disabled-led theatre company and human rights organisation that strives to give a voice, a platform and equal rights to people and communities who have previously been oppressed, forgotten and silenced.
Black Deaf and disabled voices and experiences are under-represented in UK theatre, and we acknowledge our part in that wrong. We have a responsibility as individuals & organisations to call out injustices; but to do that alone is too little too late.
Representation of Black lives must be woven through the fabric of the stories we choose to tell if we are truly to be there for our Black creatives at this time.
It is with understandable anger that people look to the silence coming from a predominantly white theatre industry & feel let down. We shouldn’t need to say it, but our affirmation stands strong: Black stories matter, Black experiences matter & ultimately Black Lives Matter.
