A summary of 2019

In 2019, Graeae:

  • Supported 10 amazing pieces of new writing from Deaf and disabled writers through the Write to Play training programme
  • Produced a national tour of Winsome Pinnock’s One Under with Theatre Royal Plymouth with a deaf and disabled cast, reaching audiences of over 3,000 across the UK
  • Delivered What Connects Us? – an outreach programme delivered alongside One Under
  • Staged and toured a brand new version of Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man, which played in Libraries in Leicestershire to year 3 and 4 pupils, in partnership with Spark Arts
  • All of the above is delivered in partnership with the best arts organisations in the business. We’d like to thank everyone, including Naked Productions and BBC Radio 4, Bristol Old Vic, Bush Theatre, Curve Leicester, Disability Arts Online, Exeter Northcott, LAMDA, Naked Productions, Ovalhouse, RADA, Ramps on the Moon, Rose Bruford College, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Soho Theatre, Spark Arts, Talawa, Tamasha, Theatre Royal Bath, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Wiltshire Creative, British Council Japan, Korea and Singapore and DADAA Perth, Australia

To look forward to in 2020:

  • A brand new play by Shahid Iqbal Khan (a Write to Play graduate) reaching audiences in London in May
  • Some scenes from our new opera!
  • Performances of The Iron Man in Hong Kong and The Tempest and The Garden in Japan
  • Ensemble 2020: an accredited training programme for young Deaf and disabled artists
  • Scratch nights for new stories being told in new ways
  • A national support network for Deaf and disabled artists to develop their own work
  • A new adaptation of Bartholomew Fair with Naked Productions, for BBC Radio 4
